The bodies of 84 Iranian sailors killed in a torpedo attack by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean are set to be repatriated to Iran on Friday, according to Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry. The incident marks one of the most serious naval confrontations between the United States and Iran in recent years and has intensified tensions in the region.
Iranian Warship Sunk Near Sri Lanka
The sailors were aboard the Iranian warship IRIS Dena when it was struck by a torpedo launched from a US submarine on 4 March. The attack occurred approximately 40 km (25 miles) off the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean.
At the time of the strike, around 130 sailors were believed to be on board the vessel. The powerful explosion caused the ship to sink rapidly, resulting in heavy casualties.

Bodies Prepared for Repatriation
Sri Lankan authorities confirmed that the bodies of 84 sailors were recovered and kept in storage at Galle National Hospital. On Friday morning, a police escort transported the bodies to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, where they will be flown back to Iran.
The repatriation operation was coordinated between Sri Lankan officials and Iranian authorities to ensure the safe return of the deceased sailors to their families.
Survivors Rescued by Sri Lankan Navy
Sri Lanka’s navy rescued 32 sailors from the sea after the attack. According to officials, the survivors are currently under medical supervision and will remain in Sri Lanka temporarily while diplomatic arrangements are made.
Rescue teams reportedly responded quickly after receiving distress signals following the explosion.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The naval strike has further escalated tensions between Iran and the United States, especially amid growing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to global shipping routes.
Military analysts warn that the sinking of an Iranian warship could trigger serious diplomatic and military repercussions, potentially impacting security in the Indian Ocean and nearby strategic shipping lanes.
International Reaction
Global leaders and security experts have expressed concern that the incident could intensify regional instability. The Indian Ocean remains a crucial maritime route for energy shipments and international trade, making any military escalation in the region a significant global concern.
Further investigations and diplomatic discussions are expected in the coming days as the situation develops.
